This very small, private museum was worth the visit for several reasons. I believe that their collection of Japanese arts far exceeds their display space, so you might see something very different than I saw, but if the Maki-e I saw was any indication, it would all be beautiful.

As mentioned by other reviewers, all text is in Japanese but you don’t have to read about something to see the beauty, and in some respects, it allowed me to focus on the pieces themselves and not be influenced by someone else’s opinion of what was important.

Kunio Maekawa – Wikiwand

For architecture fans, the building inside the kknio walls was designed by Kunio Maekawa, a protege of Le Corbusier, who also designed the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. Sitting in the small, relaxing lounge area allowed me to look more at the building itself, which I had admired once I stepped in the outer gate.

I read in one other review that the size didn’t justify the entrance fee, and I definitely appreciate the free museums in the UKbut compared to some in Kyoto and Naoshima, this place was a bargain.

No photography is allowed but their postcards are yen The postcards illustrate the range of things not currently displayed, and I will definitely go back to see a new exhibit next time.

It was a good decision to visit kuniio small museum among all others in Okayama City as they were exhibiting the scrolls of the Tale of Heike. I was fascinated with the artistry and detail of the scrolls.

For example, in the drawings you can clearly see the kimono patterns of people 1-inch in size. Six antique noh masks were also on display. The downside is that there are mmaekawa English explanations for the exhibits except for the introduction. Some beautiful things on display but simply not enough of them to justify the entrance fee. I guess coming from Glasgow where we have the Burrel Collection and the Kelvingrove Art Iunio and Museum available free of mekawa just tends to spoil one rather.

This is a very small museum, beautifully located in a former guesthouse of Okayama Castle. The paintings, swords, kimonos, pottery and other arts are all exquisite. The only problem is that none of the descriptions were in English. As markawa is “on the way” to the castle and garden, it is worth a short visit to see its beautiful items.
