If you are familiar with Chuukyuu e Ikou, will you please tell me xhukyu this book? Does it have answers in the back? Would it be good for self-studying? What mainly does it teach? What does the first chapter cover? What do you think of this book? I am in America so I don’t have a lot ioku in person buying options for Japanese learning materials.

I cgukyu how when I first started learning Japanese I was taught to use ‘anata’ a lot and then later realized that the Japanese avoid this word in sentences as much as they can unless they are speaking to their husband. I am self-studying Japanese. I have been to Japan but not recently. My vocabulary is pretty big because I have memorized a lot ikiu Japanese words and I watch dorama and movies.

But because I have self-studied I have a lot of weird little holes in my learning. I need a book that will help me with my weak grammar areas without boring me to death with remedial vocabulary and sentences.

Chuukyuu e Ikou

I thought of taking a class there but they want to put me in with their early beginners which is such a joke. They said I was a Beginner Their Beginner students only have class chukkyu 1.

Are you seriously telling me that after 4 weeks of studying Japanese, their students are anywhere near my level? Methinks their placement tests need some work.

I know my Japanese is not great but I can have a bad conversation about most things. I am not afraid to have a conversation in Japanese. I ran into a Japanese person in a restaurant last month and talked to her just in Japanese. I,ou English was great but she was nice and let me practice.

Plus, she probably misses talking in Japanese, too, since she is now in America. I took a multiple choice test of common Japanese vocabulary that I found on the internet.

And it isn’t like I only know that many words. I just knew that many of the limited words they selected for the test. I guesstimate that I know 5, or more Japanese words. If I was stuck in a class with people who had only been studying Japanese for 4 weeks, I think I would have to commit some sort of cide and I’m not really the suicidal type, you know what I mean.

But I think that is the problem with those Japanese schools. They use a very generic and inflexible formula for teaching. And if you are missing one grammar point out of 20, then instead of just fixing the one area and letting you advance, they want to start you back at square one because it is easier for them. So instead of accomodating your learning needs, they accomodate their need to make the most money for the least amount of effort.

And of course it probably is more financially rewarding for them to do things this way because most people can be suckered into taking these kinds of classes. I probably would have been suckered, too, except ijou I read a bunch of blogs from people on the internet who were angry or disappointed that they spent money on classes in Japan and got stuck in remedial classes learning material that they already knew so it was just a waste of their time and money.

I figure it works like this: Person A has studied Japanese and is almost an intermediate but never learned the proper use of particles. Person B is an advanced beginner in listening and speaking because they are living in Japan but has not studied any kanji. Person C is a low intermediate in their use of grammar because they took Japanese in college in the US but they never practiced speaking so their listening and speaking skills are low beginner.

Each of these people has a different learning need. Addressing each of their learning needs would chukyyu time consuming and difficult and also the teacher would lkou to identify exactly what their specific weaknesses are and match them with a similar group of people who are all working on the same weakness. But this approach is technical and complicated.

The easier approach, just stick them all back in chulyu Japanese with a bunch of students who have zero or minimal speaking, listening or reading or grammar skills. One-size fits all is the lazy teacher’s way out. Well, the hell if I am going to pay my hard earned money to be treated like just another twinkie on the assembly line.

So that is where I am at in my Japanese learning. I figure that the only affordable alternative right now is to self-study and if I have any extra money, spend my money traveling in Japan instead of on worthless classes. I am looking for good books that I can study from to fix my own weak areas. So I really need the books to have answers in them so I can check myself.

Any advice would be appreciated. R advice is also welcome. Chuukyuu e ikou Your post is reaaaaaaaaaaaaaallly long, so forgive me if I don’t read it in detail and opt to spend more time on a response. chu,yu

I used Chuukyuu e ikou several years ago. I would not definitely not buy it. It’s definitely not an elementary coursebook. It picks up where Minna no Nihongo leaves off, as the same publisher has put out both series. If I remember correctly, there are 10 chapters, each one based around an article.

The articles are based on topics which are either current shopping online, kids with cell phones, There’s a J-E glossary so the articles aren’t too difficult to understand, and the CD has two recordings of the article – one at normal and one at reduced speed. There’s a section on grammar used in the readings, but I felt the grammar exercises are not good and the grammar topics are not well explained. I believe there are answers to some of the exercises, but I believe they also have a section where you’re encouraged to use your own answers.

If I remember correctly, they give suggested answers, but ideally you should have a teacher checking this section. In addition, the book is really thin. If you study for more than an hour a day you’ll fly through the book in a week. If you ask me, there really aren’t any good course books after the Elementary levels. Most people cobble together a method by finding a good book for reading, for listening, for vocabulary, etc A lot of people use JLPT prep materials – not perfect, but there are heaps of books for the test.

If you think books are too expensive, check out sites like smart. At the moment it’s free, and there are tons of Japanese lessons there.

If you need Japanese grammar reference, check out Tae Kim’s website, or Jgram. JapanesePod is not perfect, but the basic content is free, and at the very least the lessons are professionally constructed. If chu,yu looking for someone to practice Japanese with, try Lang There are heaps of Japanese people who are happy to Skype with you, and will swap you J lessons fro E lessons.

Thank you for a very informative response Thank you so much. Your response gave me exactly the information that I needed.

Well, I think I will do the piecemeal approach like you said. I found a good book on particles so I am going to work through it. I think I found a good book that focuses on verbs. I know my post was long. Thank you much for telling me what you know about Chuukyuu e Ikou.
