They do agree that they may stay under certain conditions. The duchess tries to introduce her to eligible men without odfer. Esme only has eyes for St. John who is trying to live down his infamous and deal with an addiction to laudanum he uses to deal with wartime memories. It is hard to ignore Esme and his resolve slowly starts to crumble.

After their inevitable return to London, Esme has to endure un,adylike from her father and despairs of not seeing St. He does get the reward and faces one challenge after another to rescue her and get their happily ever after. Because I always wanted to know what happened to him after the end of the first book, I went ahead and bought this one.

I think it is good and it kept my attention, something not all Regencies do. I do recommend it to others who read the first book not only because of St. John, but also shows how the people in the first book have prospered. I do suggest they read the books in order as events in the first book are mentioned more than once. My Favorite of the series. St John was the villain in the first book of the series, The Mdrrill Duchess. In the years since the last novel, St John has transformed merrilo and is in the process of making himself into a respectable person.

Esme, however, is looking for the villain. In order to avoid the arranged marriage her father has planned for her, Esme seeks St john to compromise her. St John, however, delivers her to his brother with whom he continues to have a strained relationship.

As could be expected, however, Esme and St John become involved in a relationship. I enjoyed this book because of the character of St john. I really disliked him in the first book and almost stopped reading the book because of him. However, dhristine has completely redeemed himself and I was deeply interested in how he has remade himself but still has to deal with his past.

His care and consideration of Esme despite his temptation demonstrates how his character has changed. The book is a lighter read and is not overly complicated or intense, but I enjoyed it and recommend it. I read this book directly after finishing “The Inconvenient Duchess” as it follows up with the rake hell, St. John, from that book. Everything I enjoyed from “Duchess” was missing from this book.

I have two quibbles with this book. The story is far too improbable in my opinion. I understand that historical fiction is written for curistine modern reader, so SOME historical sensibilities will be ignored. However if I had only read this book by Merrill, I would assume she had chosen a time period at random and had read a wikipedia entry on Regency England as her only research. John himself was a disappointment.

To avoid spoilers I’ll just say that his coup de grace is not actually in this book, although it gets revealed in dialogue. I would have rather read that story in full than this sordid little romp in implausible pornography. I read the first book, and Inconvenient Duchess, and it was a little scandalous but I guiltily enjoyed it anyway.

This book was extra scandalous and not enjoyable. The main female lead just wasn’t likable to me- yeah, I was sorry her dad was horrible and beat her, but she just came across as a floozy.

John wasn’t a dream lead- I get that he’s trying to be good, and that’s admirable, but their whole relationship is just weird christime messed up. The book didn’t christlne the emotional compatibility of the two characters very much, just had them both be attractive and she kept throwing herself at him, and then eventually they were somehow in love. Deleted it christibe my Kindle. I always unladglike reading stories that take the “bad guy” and try to redeem him.

Merrill convinced me with this one. Interesting H, but the h Sometimes I liked her Her relationship with her father was incomprehensible. The father, who is supposedly the villain almost plays no part in the development and resolution of the conflict.

I kept reading just to see how the H changes his ways. I also liked the role of Miranda, and the Duke. The main characters in the previous book. They are not the “perfect couple” but there is a certain charm in offdr characters. One person found this helpful. Beautiful romance; both leads tug at your heart; the storyline is plausible and dramatic while remaining believable and realistic; family dynamics are very well-done; otfer tension is exactly right.

I recommend this book, and separately, I unladyli,e recommend the 1st book in this series. I loved seeing what St John was I loved seeing what St John was up to after he got banned from his brothers house. This was a little more sexually explicit than I am comfortable with, so I quickly skimmed over those parts.

I’m seeing that this is a part of her writing style, so I doubt I read any more of her books as I am a bit of a prude. See all 44 reviews. There’s a problem loading this menu right now.
