Base-level knowledge on chemistry and mathematics Target skills and knowledge: Through theoretical lectures and practical exercises, students will acquire knowledge on fundamental chemistry. The resolution of numerical exercises regarding the topics dealt during theoretical lessons will also make the student familiar with a scientific approach toward various chemical topics.
Written exam regarding stochiometry exercises and theoretical questions Assessment criteria: Students’ evaluation will consist of a written exam including stochiometry exercises and theoretical questions regarding the various topics dealt during lectures.
Fundamental laws of chemistry. Mass unit and mole. Quantum numbers and electronic shells. Periodic table and periodic properties. Oxidation state and balanced chemical equations. Ionic, metallic and covalent bond. Introduction to molecular orbitals. Laws describing the gas behavior. The ideal gas law and pertaining systems of units. Phase diagram of water. Solutions and their properties. Colligative properties and dissolved species. Spontaneous processes and thermodynamic equilibrium.
The law of mass action. Description of equilibrium constant for homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions. Equilibria in aqueous solutions. Conjugate acids and bases and relationship between Ka and Kb. Strength of moniprotic and polyprotic acids and bases.

Amphoteric species, hydrolysis and buffer solutions. Acid-base titrations and indicators. Solubility, precipitation and solubility product. The effect of pH on solubility. Cell potential, role of concentration and Nerst equation. Electrolysis and Faraday laws.
