This book bored me to death. The plot is non-existent, with just a few scenes being of any interest whatsoever. The narrative is awfully slow-paced, with Desai’s descriptions doing nothing more than slowing an already dead-beat story down to a snail’s pace. This is one of the rare books that I was so happy to finish quickly. Final remark- Read this only when you have nothing else to embark upon. Mar 15, Vaidya rated it blackbitd it. The language is flowery, as one can expect from Anita Desai. The sentences are chiseled and it makes for a good read. You really have to work your deesai through the rest. I also had a hard time understanding the issues immigrants faced in England, and reconciling with her descriptions of India.

On top of that, this was something we had to study for our literature class I blanked out after balckbird first few pages and went into a zombie-like state during those classes.
