I always enjoy books by Alistair MacLean, even though he tends to follow the same formula as he develops his stories – tough, resourceful protagonist takes on bad guys, and against overwhelming odds, prevails and wins the day.
Unfortunately for me the production got further out of hand, and the film far exceeded the budget. And he turns out to be nearly omniscient, omnipotent, has near super human powers and it’s simply too unbelievable to make you feel like it’s remotely real.

But really, this is only his eighth book! The final fifteen minutes of the screenplay led to a conclusion that bore little resemblance to the book plot. Aboard the SS Campari, all is not well. It was an engaging turn of events and the setting, a maclezn ship at sea, enhanced the experience. It’s mwclean great plot, but I don’t give a bugger about the characters, partly cos they talk too much bollocks.
It’s just got 12 luxurious rooms and good food, but no pools or dancing or gambling or ports of call or anything.
